Fun At-Home Learning Activities at Shearwater

August 6th, 2020

For kids, the idea of staying home can be exciting – even if school still happens virtually. For parents, it can feel a little more chaotic than that. Keeping the kids active and busy is key to everyone staying happy. Even more so if you’re working from home and need some peace and quiet! At Shearwater, it’s easy for kids to not just stay busy, but keep their brains active while staying at home so they’re always learning something new.

STEAM Learning

Keeping kids engaged with science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics is important for nurturing their growing minds. At Shearwater, many homes feature a flex space that’s perfect for letting the kids explore these topics. Bust out the Legos and see who can build the strongest bridge, or compete to create the tallest tower using just marshmallows and dry spaghetti noodles. There are even a variety of subscription boxes designed just for STEAM learning, so you can keep the fun going all summer. Craft kits, like paint by numbers, cross stitching or small sewing kits, are a great way to spend an afternoon enjoying the arts.

Great Outdoors

The best way to have some quiet at home? Get the kids outside! There are 15 miles of nature trails to explore at Shearwater, with a new discovery around every corner. Organize a family hike, stopping to identify native plants and birds along the way. Apps like PlantSnap help you identify plant species and learn more about what makes them unique. You could even plan a fun scavenger hunt, and young kids will love collecting leaves and flowers to make a nature bracelet along the way using just a piece of tape.

Lifestyle Programming

The fun hasn’t stopped at Shearwater! Our Lifestyle Director has continued to plan events for residents to enjoy, while following recommended social-distancing guidelines. Every Monday night, there’s a new food truck at the community so the whole family can try out foods from around that world that you might not otherwise cook at home. In August, Shearwater is hosting a socially distanced Movie on the Lawn, and residents get to vote for which movie to watch. And, there’s even virtual dance lessons on the horizon!
