A Boston developer has kicked off construction at a 2,000-home community on County Road 210 in St. Johns County.
Freehold Communities has begun development of Shearwater, a master-planned community that will embrace “healthy living, engagement, connectivity, stewardship of nature and distinctive design,” the company announced.
The 1,500-acre community will include 400,000 square feet of commercial retail, a K-8 school and 600 acres of open space.
The community will be west of Interstate 95.
Amenities will include parks and trails, a fitness lodge with a resort-style lagoon pool and multi-lane lap pool, three-story water slide tower, lazy bird river, sports fields and tennis courts, a canoe/kayak launch in a future phase.
Builders so far are David Weekley Homes, Lennar and MasterCraft Builder Group.
Phase one is expected to open in the fall this year.
